Snowshoeing in Kananaskis
I got my first pair of snowshoes when I was 12... that was about 30 years ago, so they were wood frames, leather straps with some kind of resin coated material. i.e. they were heavy and awkward and lost their novelty after the first winter. However, the last couple of years I have been reading about the new types of snowshoes and started thinking these could be fun. So after doing a little research (talking to a sales guy at MEC in Calgary) Helen and I each bought a pair of MSR Lightening Ascents and then the next day headed to Chester Lake in Kananaskis.
I expected them to be somewhat better than my first pair 30 years ago, but I also expected the hike to Chester Lake was going to be a lot of work. I was wrong on both accounts. The snowshoes were exponentially better, especially with the elevator bar for going up hill. The trail was quite well packed and although it was harder than if we were hiking it in the summer, it was still way easier than I expected.
Below is some of the video highlights of the day.
We are looking forward to doing quite a few more snowshoeing hikes this winter.
