This is Kevin Callan's blog about his trips, his (mis-)adventures, and his favourite gear.

Testing Environmental Vital Stove in Killarney

While at the Toronto Outdoor Adventure Show a few weeks back I did what everyone else was doing – I went shopping for new gear. Here’s a gadget that I picked up at the Eureka booth: Vital Stove. It’s a compact stove that burns everything except liquid fuel (even advertized that it burns dung extremely well?). Well, I tried it out while winter camping in the interior of Killarney Provincial Park a few days ago and put a video together on my first impressions – which I have to admit are darn good.

I used a very similar stove when I was canoeing above the tree line. I recommend bringing a pair of ratcheting gardening snips (especially when dealing with tough willow on the tundra) to clip the sticks to the perfect size. Make a little pile beside the stove so you can keep feeding it. The stove is great and defiantly puts out a lot of heat; it can almost double as a mini campfire. It is very light and definitely a neat, functional piece of gear to add to your arsenal. The stove will blacken your pots but in the end this will actually make them better at conducting heat.

That's a nice stove. I also like your axe and gloves.

I can't hear your video.
